Sekkisei Medicated Lotion

Before my first trip to Tokyo in 2016, I looked up some beauty products that were recommended to purchase while in Japan.  The brand, Sekkisei, and it's distinctive and elegant dark blue packaging, repeatedly popped up as one of the must-purchase-products in Japan.

Sekkisei is a Japanese skin care line that was started in 1985 and focuses on skin brightening products that "have captured centuries-old wisdom and combined it with the latest scientific research to formulate a unique combination of Japanese and Chinese herbal extracts."  One of the Chinese characters in the name, Sekkisei, means "snow," which signifies the brightness and purity that is the goal of this skincare line.

The top selling Sekkisei product is the Sekkisei medicated lotion, which is the product I decided to purchase in Japan.  The Sekkisei lotion is a toner that claims to reduce "dullness and promote an even, refined skin tone."

This product contains many amazing herbal ingredients including coix seed extract, licorice extract, angelica acutiloba root extract, witch hazel extract, and melothria extract.  Of note, it also contains alcohol as one of its primary ingredients, which accounts for the very strong alcohol-scent when it is applied.

I have been using the Sekkisei medicated lotion intermittently for nearly a year, applying it after I wash my face.  You can apply this using a cotton pad, however I have recently been applying it with just my hands, tapping it into my skin like an essence.  This has a cooling, slightly tingling sensation when applied - so refreshing!  After prolonged usage, I feel that this product is helping to clear and brighten my skin.  My main issue with the Sekkisei medicated lotion is the smell!  It has perhaps the strongest alcohol scent I have encountered with a skincare product, however this does go away quite quickly after application.  I'm able to overlook the scent as the product seems to be helping my skin, however if you are at all sensitive to scented products, you may want to avoid this one.

I have combination skin with a very oily T-zone and this product works well with my skin but I think it has the potential to be drying for those with dry skin types.  It does not plump or moisturize as much as some of the other toners I have tried.  While I have not personally used it, for those with dry skin, you may want to consider the Sekkisei Lotion Enriched, which claims to provide a "supple, well-hydrated glow."  Overall, I think this is a great brightening toner for oily/combination/normal skin types.  The Sekkisei medicated lotion is available online - 200mL for $48.

Have you tried any Sekkisei products?
