All About Green Tea!

Green tea, which is derived from Camellia sinensis, is one of the most discussed "superfoods" as it is filled with antioxidants and nutrients and has numerous health benefits for both inside our bodies and out.  Scientific studies have demonstrated that the antioxidants in green tea, including polyphenols such as Epigallocatechin gallate or EGCG, can help to protect your skin from UV rays and pollutants, as well as reduce the free radicals that contribute to cell aging.

Epigallocatechin gallate or EGCG is a type of polyphenol antioxidant (also known as a catechin), which is very abundant in teas with green tea having the highest concentration of EGCG in comparison to black tea and white tea.  In addition to its anti-aging skin benefits for firming and tightening the skin, studies have shown EGCG is also effective against acne by modulating pathways and suppressing the NF-kB pathway, which contributes to inflammation.  Green tea also contains tannins, which are responsible for its slightly bitter taste, and also reduces sebum production as it is an astringent polyphenol.

As I work in an air-conditioned setting, my skin often feels dry and tight near the end of the day.  I recently picked up The Chok Chok Green Tea Watery Mist by Tony Moly to refresh my skin.  This is made of 100% green tea fermented extract - I love the idea of giving my skin some extra antioxidants and nutrients throughout the day.  I was very impressed by the fine mist - it is great for spraying over makeup as the mist is very lightweight and does not leave large drops on your face.  This mist is moisturizing and toning with the smaller size being perfect to throw into your bag and use when you're on the go.  I highly recommend!  This is available from tonymoly.us for $13 for 50mL.
